DPN before after with Laser vs Hyfrecation

Dermatosis papulosa nigra, or DPN, are small, benign growths that commonly appear on the face—especially the cheeks and around the eyes. They are very common in people with skin of color, particularly African Americans, and are largely genetic. While completely harmless, many patients choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons.

Our Usual Approach: Hyfrecation

Traditionally, we treat DPN using hyfrecation, a form of electrosurgical destruction. It’s highly precise and works especially well for smaller lesions. This is typically our go-to method because it allows for careful, controlled removal with excellent cosmetic outcomes.

Trying Something Different: Laser Treatment

In this case, we took a different approach. On this patient’s left cheek, we used the Aerolase Era laser instead of hyfrecation. Both methods ultimately work by destroying the lesion—they just use different types of energy to achieve that goal.

We wanted to evaluate how the laser performs. As you’ll see in the after, the results are equally excellent and comparable to hyfrecation. Of course, results may vary.

DPN removal with laser vs hyfrection: Choosing the Right Tool

In general, hyfrecation remains ideal for very small, precise spots because of the level of control it offers. However, laser can be a great option for patients with larger lesion, where efficiency and smooth coverage are important.

Most importantly, both treatments can be performed safely on darker skin types when done properly, minimizing the risk of pigmentation changes.
