As we age, we often experience facial volume loss. This can make our faces appear more “sunken in,” causing the skin to sag and form folds. The result is a more aged appearance or a tired or sad expression. Facial volume loss can also be a concern for younger people who have lost weight or very fit people with low body fat.
Dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® can help address these common issues. JUVÉDERM is a hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in our skin. Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate (sugar) that attracts water to help volumize the skin and decrease the appearance of fine lines on the face.
At Aglow Dermatology, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dina Strachan can use JUVÉDERM to refresh your appearance, add youthful volume, and enhance your features. To learn more about this treatment, read on or call our New York, NY practice at 212-627-1004 to book an appointment.
Which Areas Can JUVÉDERM Treat?
JUVÉDERM offers a collection of six different fillers designed for specific cosmetic concerns in various areas of the face. These fillers can:
- Volumize the cheeks.
- Plump the lips.
- Treat smile lines.
- Define the chin and jawline.
- Smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
Fill sunken circles around the eyes.
At your consultation, Dr. Strachan will determine whether it is safe for you to receive the treatment and whether a JUVÉDERM product will address your concerns.
What Are the Different Types of JUVÉDERM?
During your JUVÉDERM appointment, Dr. Strachan will choose the most appropriate products for your aesthetic needs. The JUVÉDERM collection of dermal fillers includes:
- JUVÉDERM VOLUX™ XC: This injectable gel is administered deep into the dermis to minimize jowls and improve jawline definition.
- JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC: This product improves the appearance of nasolabial folds (AKA smile lines) or lax skin around the jaw.
- JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC: This hyaluronic acid gel can augment the chin and correct age-related hollows under the cheeks.
- JUVÉDERM Ultra XC: This type of JUVÉDERM is designed to give your lips a naturally plump appearance while smoothing lip lines for a more youthful look.
- JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC: If you want extra volume for an Instagram-worthy pout, this injectable can provide dramatic enhancements for up to a year.
- JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC: This type of JUVÉDERM is commonly used for lip augmentation and perioral line (vertical lip line) correction. It can also improve tear trough hollows under the eyes.
The consistency and formulation of JUVÉDERM products affect how they sit under the skin, so certain types are best at addressing specific treatment areas. As an experienced injector, Dr. Strachan can choose the right product for your unique needs.
How Should I Prepare for JUVÉDERM Injections?
Before your JUVÉDERM treatment, it’s best to avoid aspirin and NSAIDs (ibuprofen) for at least a week, as these medications increase the risk of bruising after dermal filler injections. Additionally, certain herbal supplements, including garlic, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba, can increase the risk of bruising from JUVÉDERM. Alcohol is also a vasodilator that increases blood flow, so it’s best to abstain for a few days before your treatment. We do not inject the filler during pregnancy.
What Happens During a JUVÉDERM Treatment?
During your JUVÉDERM appointment, Dr. Strachan will discuss your cosmetic goals, examine your unique facial anatomy, and determine how much and which type of dermal filler to administer. An ice pack can be applied to numb the area. Then, your skin will be cleaned with an antiseptic before Dr. Strachan injects JUVÉDERM into your desired treatment areas and gently massages the filler for even distribution.
When Will I See JUVÉDERM Results?
Initial JUVÉDERM results can often be seen immediately depending on the type used, the location of the treatment, and the individual patient. Full results usually appear after two weeks, with the effects of JUVÉDERM commonly lasting nine months to a year. Some patients enjoy their results for up to 18 months.
How Long Is JUVÉDERM Recovery?
One of the biggest perks of dermal fillers is that they come with virtually no downtime. Many patients get JUVÉDERM injections and return to work immediately after their appointments. You may experience mild swelling, bruising, itching, redness, or tenderness at the injection site. These side effects typically resolve in a few days to a week. You should avoid heavy pressure on the target area for two weeks as the product settles. Otherwise, you can typically return to your normal activities the same day.
