Dermatologists sometimes address problems that go beyond what is found on a patient’s skin, hair or nails. When the condition is primarily psychological in origin, it falls under the specialty of psychodermatology.
Skin picking, hair pulling, nail and cheek biting– these are conditions that fall under the term body-focused repetitive disorders. The root is psychological but the impact in on the skin, hair and nails.
