Punch Biopsy

A punch biopsy is a simple in-office procedure used to diagnose a wide range of skin conditions. During the procedure, Dr. Dina Strachan removes a small, circular sample of skin using a specialized instrument called a punch. The tissue is then sent to a laboratory where a dermatopathologist examines it under a microscope.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A punch biopsy is typically completed in just a few minutes. After cleansing the area, Dr. Strachan administers a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. A small circular instrument is then used to remove a sample of skin.

Depending on the size of the biopsy, the site may be closed with one or two stitches. A bandage is applied, and you will receive instructions on how to care for the area while it heals.

Will There Be a Scar?

Any procedure that removes skin can leave a small scar. However, punch biopsies are designed to obtain the information needed while minimizing cosmetic impact whenever possible. Dr. Strachan carefully selects the biopsy location and closure technique to help achieve the best healing outcome.

Getting Your Results

Biopsy results are typically available within one to two weeks. Once the pathology report is received, Dr. Strachan will review the findings with you and discuss any next steps, including treatment recommendations if necessary.
