Did you know that you can use Botox for a gummy smile? Other neurotoxins work for this, too.
What is a gummy smile?
A gummy smile is a term used to describe a smile where an excessive amount of gum tissue is visible when a person smiles. This can be caused by a variety of factors, such as excessive gum tissue, a short upper lip, or hyperactive muscles that lift the upper lip too high. While a gummy smile is not a medical concern, it can have a significant impact on a person’s self-esteem and confidence. It is a cosmetic concern.
While some dental treatments, such as laser gum contouring, can help, they may not completely eliminate the a gummy smile and leave patients feeling dissatisfied. While some individuals may be born with a gummy smile, others may experience it as they age due to muscle movement changes or after dental work. To address this issue, Dr. Strachan and her team are able to use Botox® injections in the upper lip muscles to relax them, causing less upward movement and therefore reducing the appearance of a gummy smile.
How does Botox for gummy smile work?
Botox, short for botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is commonly used in cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by relaxing muscles. This is also how it works for gummy smile treatment. When injected into the muscles responsible for lifting the upper lip, Botox temporarily paralyzes these muscles, reducing their ability to lift the lip excessively. This results in a more balanced smile, with less gum tissue visible.
