Diagnosis and Treatment of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer refers to the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of skin cells. Some skin cancers, such as malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma are potentially life-threatening.  Risk factors for developing skin cancer include pale skin, family history of melanoma, being over 40 years old, and regular sun exposure.  People of all races, however, can develop skin cancer.

If you have any of the following cancer warning signs, you should be examined by a professional immediately:

  • Unusual marks, bumps or growths on your skin
  • A sore that has not healed in 3-4 weeks
  • A wound that continually reopens or bleeds
  • A growth that increases in size or appears translucent
  • A mole with any of the following signs:
    • Larger than a pencil eraser (about 6 mm)
    • Rapidly changes in color, size or shape
    • Has multiple colors
    • Is located where it can't be easily monitored, such as on the scalp

Early intervention is essential to preventing the cancer from spreading. During your consultation, Dr. Strachan will discuss the use of sunscreen, and other techniques, which help reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Ethnic Skin

Some skin, hair and nail conditions are more common, or present differently, in people of a non-European ethnic background. Furthermore, culture and habits may influence appropriate treatment options. Dr. Strachan offers care specifically tailored to the dermatologic needs of patients of all ethnic backgrounds.

Acne

Acne is one of the most common diagnosis in both adults and teenagers. It is a disease of the hair follicles that commonly affects the face and well as the neck, chest, back and arms. Acne lesions may leave unsightly scars or blemishes. Although a harmless condition, acne can affect a person’ confidence. Adult women are especially vulnerable to developing acne. It may be related to hormonal problems. There are a variety of effective prescription treatments and in-office procedures which help clear the skin of acne and the marks it leaves behind.

Hair Loss

Hair loss occurs in both men and women for a variety of reasons. Common causes include hormonal problems, genetics, thyroid disease, anemia, diet, medications and grooming habits. It is important to see a trained dermatologist if one is experiencing hair loss as it may be the sign of an underlying medical problem. Also, some conditions cause damage to the scalp resulting in permanent hair loss if they are not diagnosed and treated early. By seeing an expert, you may also save money by getting the correct diagnosis rather than purchasing products sold over-the-counter that are unlikely to help your specific condition.

Removal of Facial Moles

Moles and other birthmarks are benign pigmented spots or patches of skin that range in color from tan, brown and black (moles) to red, pink or purple (vascular nevi, such as strawberry hemangiomas or port wine stains). Depending on their depth, location and color, as well as the patient’s skin type, age and other factors, treatment for benign birthmarks may take the form of laser or pulsed light therapy, or surgical excision.

Dermatosis papulosa nigra, a condition in which people develop small, brown, scaly papules on the face, neck and/or chest. They are sometimes described as "moles," however they are another type of benign papule that can be removed with an electric needle for cosmetic reasons.
