Diagnosis and Treatment of Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer Treatment | Hair Loss Treatment | Keloids Treatment | Manhattan | New York CitySkin cancer refers to the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of skin cells. Some skin cancers, such as malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma are potentially life-threatening. Risk factors for developing skin cancer include pale skin, family history of melanoma, being over 40 years old, and regular sun exposure. People of all races, however, can develop skin cancer.

If you have any of the following cancer warning signs, you should be examined by a professional immediately:

  • Unusual marks, bumps or growths on your skin
  • A sore that has not healed in 3-4 weeks
  • A wound that continually reopens or bleeds
  • A growth that increases in size or appears translucent
  • A mole with any of the following signs:
    • Larger than a pencil eraser (about 6 mm)
    • Rapidly changes in color, size or shape
    • Has multiple colors
    • Is located where it can’t be easily monitored, such as on the scalp

Early intervention is essential to preventing the cancer from spreading. During your consultation, Dr. Strachan will discuss the use of sunscreen, and other techniques, which help reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Ethnic Skin

Some skin, hair and nail conditions are more common, or present differently, in people of a non-European ethnic background. Furthermore, culture and habits may influence appropriate treatment options. Dr. Strachan offers care specifically tailored to the dermatologic needs of patients of all ethnic backgrounds.

Skin Biopsy

A skin biopsy is a surgical procedure in which a small piece of skin is removed for analysis under a microscope. It is useful in the diagnosis of skin cancers and other dermatological diseases. Some types of biopsies may require a stitch.

Hair Loss Treatment

Skin Cancer Treatment | Hair Loss Treatment | Keloids Treatment | Manhattan | New York CityHair loss occurs in both men and women for a variety of reasons. Common causes include hormonal problems, genetics, thyroid disease, anemia, diet, medications and grooming habits. It is important to see a trained dermatologist if one is experiencing hair loss as it may be the sign of an underlying medical problem. Also, some conditions cause damage to the scalp resulting in permanent hair loss if they are not diagnosed and treated early. By seeing an expert, you may also save money by getting the correct diagnosis rather than purchasing products sold over-the-counter that are unlikely to help your specific condition.

Treatment of Keloids

Keloids are an abnormal type of scarring response in which tissue overgrows past the margins of the wound. They occur in people of all races but more commonly in people of African descent. Treatment may require injection of steroid, topical medicine, surgery or radiation.

Mole Removal / Birthmark Removal

Skin Cancer Treatment | Hair Loss Treatment | Keloids Treatment | Manhattan | New York CityMoles and other birthmarks are benign pigmented spots or patches of skin that range in color from tan, brown and black (moles) to red, pink or purple (vascular lesions, such as strawberry hemangiomas or port wine stains). Though most birthmarks are harmless, they may develop into cancer. Moles exhibiting any of the following warning signs should be examined by a professional immediately:

  • Larger than six millimeters.
  • Itches or bleeds.
  • Rapidly changes in color, size or shape.
  • Has multiple colors.
  • Is located where it can’t be easily monitored, such as on the scalp.

Depending on their depth, location and color, as well as the patient’s skin type, age and other factors, treatment for benign but unattractive birthmarks may take the form of laser or pulsed light therapy, microdermabrasion or surgical excision.
